A few years ago a friend gave me an old feather bed when she moved [thanks, Sara]. I've been holding on to it for a long while, so today I finally put it to good use and made a pet bed out of it. And most importantly, it's no longer collecting dust in my spare room.

Blend together with a fork 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, 1/4 tsp salt, 4 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp sugar. Cut in with a pastry blender 6 Tbsp butter or shortening. Mix in 1/2 cup of half-n-half and 1/2 cup butter milk (milk + vinegar). Mix well.

Place about 3/4 cup flour on plate. Spoon biscuit dough onto flour, covering completely and shaping into a ball. Make sure to flour fingers for ease of working with dough.

Place biscuit in a greased pie plate and bake at 425* for about 12 minutes.

So easy. So good.

This doll is made of re-purposed fabric picked up from the thrift store. As wonky as it turned out, it could definitely be somebodies playmate long enough for a giggle or two.

Since I was taking a herd of kids to Disneyland, I packed her up and planned to execute a drop on behalf of the toy society. No simple task, I huddled the kids around the 'sword in the stone' and tied her to the chain rope barrier. I think the kids got a kick out of being a part of the ploy.

The day to drop handmade toys for The Toy Society's 2009 Christmas Drop has arrived!!!

With the intention of leisurely making a toy, I signed up to participate in the toy drop a couple months ago; yet of course the day came rushing upon me with no warning at all! I spent a day quickly stitching together two simple dolls using left over supplies from my stash. My dining room is a mess of loose threads and left-over bits of fabric, but all in all I'm pleased with the contribution to The Toy Society's Christmas campaign.

Off to a late start on the day of the drop, I texted some buddies and asked if they'd like to take a drive--surprisingly they wanted to tag along! Four of us piled into my Toyota and headed north on highway 395.

The first toy was dropped at the Visitor's Center in Lone Pine. The structure itself has always been one of my favorite buildings within a hundred mile radius, and I knew the perfect spot to make the drop. Once the toy was dropped in it's designated waiting place, we stealthily made our exit as though we were on a secret mission.

To drop the second toy, we drove a few miles farther north to the Manzanar War Internment Center historic site. My secret agent elf friends and I agreed the Manzanar museum would provide enough pedestrian traffic to create a high probability of the toy being found.

We toured the gallery of artifacts before dropping the toy, and I was moved by the collection of memorabilia. For a moment I questioned weather the toy drop might be offensive to some museum visitors. I then stumbled upon an exhibit of old toys from the children who lived and played in the internment facility, and I had a change of heart. I realized the handmade toy was my way of paying tribute to the children who grew up inside the barbed-wire fences at Manzanar during World War II.

This toy drop was quite emotional.

All done and settled, I have to say this is the most wonderful time of the year.

I stitched up these two bears to raise money for the American Cancer Society. My Relay for Life team (the Cancer Kickin' Angels) is selling raffle tickets, and the two bears will go to randomly selected homes. As always, these bears were a lot of fun to make and were made with a lot of inspiration from my Mammaw:)

DPM Drops Again!

Drove to Bishop for work today, and took advantage of the opportunity to make a contribution on behalf of The Toy Society. The weather was perfect and there was a lot of foot traffic along the main drag on CA 395--prime climate for toy finders to be on the prowl.

Without using a pattern I made a toy snake from fabric scrapes, and the final product looks hand made, for sure! Had fun making it, though. Brought back memories of hanging out with my grandmother and watching her put together toys. Good times:)

High Street Messenger Bag Completed

I spent my '09 Labor Day sewing together a book bag to replace the back pack that finally busted a zipper last week.

Sometime last winter, I picked up green duck cloth from a craft store in Bishop. Immediately I knew it would be the ideal fabric for a bag to carry my "work stuff" in.

Yes, I know, it's a murse.

I spent a long while researching messenger bag design/patterns, and I'm pleased with the results. The pattern is called "high street messenger bag". It was pretty complicated but well written. I don't remember where I bought it. Kudos to the lady who designed it: Amy Butler. Talented woman.

For the lining I ordered a crazy print fabric (Anna Marie Horner's Garden Party) from Sew, Mama Sew! The fabric was on sale, and I liked the combination of shapes and colors. Also, a friend once told me bright colors work best for bag linings because more light gets reflected, thus making it brighter and easier to find stuff. I suppose white would have been a brighter choice....

The thread and zippers--I picked up at Wal-Mart. Should have bought a better quality thread, but I'm to cheap to splurge on such minor (but important) details. [kicking myself]

Six months later, the project is completed. I look forward to trying it out at work tomorrow:)

After an exhausting week of work, I drove to Lone Pine and fished near the Whitney Portal overflow parking lot. The weather was perfect, but the fishing wasn't. Still, I'm glad to have gotten away from the valley for a couple hours.

While standing in the creek fishing, two deer strolled across the creek. As they grazed on leaves and grass, I snapped a few photos.

Today was a pleasantly relaxing day.

the quilt-along progresses

Oh, Fransson!'s quilt-along continues to occupy my evenings and weekends. The blocks have finally been assembled, and now I have to square each one. Since Tracy Word punctured the back of her esophagus with a wooden ruler in Ms Williams' second grade class, I've had a phobia of rulers and measuring devices. Perhaps this quilt-along will balance my metric chi?!?

Here's a couple pics of the blocks to give an idea of where this process is leading :)

BTW: I've decided this quilt will be a gift for my Aunt Carol. She's been on my mind and in my heart throughout the process, and I think she'll get a lot of use from a new lap quilt. It's a gift, so don't tell her!

Thread Banging with Oh, Fransson!

My drive to maintain a sense of individuality has been lost, and I've joined the masses. I signed up for Oh, Fransson!'s quilt-along.

(I know, I know, I know! I just couldn't sustain the fight....

My old age has weakened my will.)

The quilt-along is a lot of fun, actually. I feel like I'm back in college attending an art class; except the floor is carpeted, I'm the only person in the class and the room is less conducive to the creative process. I've been impressed by the talents posted over at Oh, Fransson! for a while, and I consider the opportunity to learn from such a masterful artisan a stroke of luck. The entire process is expected to last through March, but I anticipate fabric and thread scattered throughout the house well into April.

Thus far I've learned there's a lot of forethought involved in constructing a quilt measuring 52" X 62": gathering supplies, considering color and pattern, choosing & obtaining fabric, preparing fabric, measuring (like a *it#h!) and cutting fabric (sometimes twice).

The fabric I chose is called MOONDANCE, and I won it from a blog raffle hosted by a groovy lady, named Jenean Morrison, who creates beautiful art. The Moondance fabric is based on her inspiration.

So far, two weeks in, I've managed to cut out the blocks--hundreds, if not millions, of tiny fabric blocks. They're neatly organized and waiting to be sewn together. By me.

Can I do it? Will I follow through? Stay tuned!

The finished product won't cover a twin bed completely,

but it'll be big enough to take to a football game on a Friday night.

My second attempt at a baby quilt has finally ended.

I thought I'd never finish it.

The process taught me a couple things:

Garish colors are best used by drag queens.
Pink doesn't necessarily mean fluorescent.
Dark colors are not always forgiving.
Size matters: broken needles happen for a reason.
I''m capable of producing a quilt.

Swapping: everyone should try it at least once

I am officially a swapper!

I stumbled upon a crafter's website a couple weeks ago, and discovered a world of creative minded crafters who find joy in sharing the product of their creativity. The "swap" was organized to bring awareness to the The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), and how this piece of legislation affects artisans who make and sell hand-made toys.

After being accepted as a member of the swap (there's always a little anxiety when it comes to anticipating acceptance), I went to work on creating a hand-made toy worthy of swapping.

I first began with the idea of creating a project completely from scratch. After scouring the web, I ended up making a zombie-like teddy bear creation that resembled one of Tim Burton's overlooked animated characters. Here's a photo collage of that monstrosity:

After reviewing the other projects posted on the swap group's page on Flickr, I realized I'd have to step up my game and put together something a little more--well... something better! So, I went back to a pattern my grandmother used: SIMPLICITY 5461. An old-school teddy bear very similar to the bears I had when I was a young boy. Not the first time using the pattern, I enjoyed the security of following directions and "coloring within the lines."

I did it. I swapped.

And a few days later, I received from a cool chica in Grand Rapids, Michigan an awesome doll! She'll make a great addition to my office, and I think the kids will enjoy helping me find where she'll make her home. Maybe I'll let them name her, too.

What a cool experience-way cool! And the stamps on the package are pretty sweeet-tah!

US PRESIDENT ADMITS TO BEING HUMAN

I have to admit, I am not "Oprah-crazy" for the new president; but if he keeps behaving like a rational human-being, I might find myself leaning in that direction. My admiration for the POTUS is growing day-by-day.

President Obama today admitted he made a mistake in nominating Tom Daschle to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Unlike the previous dude who filled the POTUS position, President Obama is taking responsibility for his decisions. President Obama went on all the major news broadcasts to admit his short-comings and to address the issue.

Whoa... how refreshing is that?!? Is this guy for real?

With the new year, I decided to revisit my artisan roots. My father's side of the family has always embraced their artistic abilities, and many of my relatives are/were crafty people.

I began this endeavor with an attempt to channel my Mammaw's energy by putting together a quilt. Since my friend Tanya was expecting her second baby, I made my mind up to make a baby quilt to gift at her baby shower. Here's a lousy photo of my first attempt at quilting. It may not be pretty, but it was a lot of fun to make; and I think she really appreciated the gift.

Following the quilt, I took on the challenge of making a camera bag and case for a young lady who works with me. Because she has trouble keeping her camera & equipment together, I offered to make her a bag to organize her stuff. The photo below shows the finished product--I was amazed by how nicely the project turned out! I'm especially glad to see it turned out well because the recipient not only works with me, but she was one of the many children I've taken care of over the years.

On a roll, I made a recyclable lunch sack for my friend, Ruth. I made Ruth go to the fabric store with me to pick her choice of fabric--I really dig her choices. For both bags, I followed the instructions from a very clever lady's blog at oh, fransson!

Armed with a newly found sense of accomplishment and a load of crafty links from the web, I discovered a blog site called the Toy Society. The Toy Society is a really cool group of artisans from around the world who make toys and "drop" them in various places with the intention of a child finding the toy and giving it a new home. Besides giving my efforts a sense of purpose, it provided me with an opportunity to commit a random act of kindness.

I searched the web and found a very cool pattern for a nifty doll. I stitched up a doll, followed the instructions from the Toy Society's web page, and dropped the doll off at a local park. Below are photos of the experience.

And now, after a month of reconnecting with my creative self, I'm feeling pretty good. It's good to be productive, and the creative process mends the soul's sorrows. January's been a good start to the new year, and I hope this serves as a grand beginning to a year of creative exploration.

JOIN THE IMPACT: Bakersfield, California

Having slept for only four hours, I (with two good buddies) left Ridgecrest at 8 o'clock for the protest at Bakersfield City Hall. I was up till 3 o'clock in the morning perfecting my protest signs, but I was surprisingly rested and ready for a day of peaceful protesting.

On the drive to Bakersfield, we stopped in Onyx, CA to hold a pre-protest for a herd of conservative bovine. While the cows were considerably open to our point of view, a lone bull was agitated by our protest; and we were unable to stay for a long while.

Upon our arrival to Bakersfield, we discovered about 30 protesters located directly in front of the Kern County Court House. Not at all surprised by the small number of protesters, my buddies and I staked out a corner on the intersection of Truxtun and Chester Avenue and lifted our protest signs.

The protest was rather uneventful. About 70-or-so protesters were gathered at the event's apex, but no violence or hatred was witnessed by myself or my buddies. The most outrageous event of the day came when a shiny, black Hummer drove through the intersection; and a chubby white man yelled from the window, "I'm LDS and proud of it!"

The protest organizers arrived around noon, and the protesters in attendance gathered for a moderately rousing rally. Arguably the most attractive of all those present, the organizers talked about the need to make a stand for gay civil rights and thanked all those who showed up for the display of unity.

Identifying as a liberal living in California's most conservative county--I'm in my comfort zone. I grew up in the river-bottoms of south Arkansas, and I'm well accustomed to being surrounded by simple-minded evangelical extremists spouting bigotry and fear from a bully pulpit. I'm glad to have been a participant in this growing movement to recognize gay civil liberties--especially since I live in the most conservative part of the country's most liberal state. I'm a proud American and Californian, and I look forward to the day when each citizen is treated to equal liberties under the law.

As of Halloween 2008, it's down to Obama having a well publicised lead over McCain. A year ago I was stoked to know a Clinton would once again clean up a George Bush mess--I was wrong!

According to the media, Obama is more likely to win by a land-slide than McCain win without a court-appointed controversy.

Obama is the less known candidate, but he could charm the eyelashes off a drag-queen and probably has. He photographs well. He has great posture. He's an avid basketball player and a former lawyer. He has two kids and a smart, hot wife. He's a Senator (for how long?). Oprah likes him a lot, and I think she has her chef cook him dinner--I'm sure they pour their own wine, though.

McCain is the Greatest American Hero, but he comes with the unfortunate baggage of the RNC. He's like an all-star quarterback who's been falsely accused of raping the homecoming queen, and left to face the consequences of a guilty male head cheerleader who after high school graduation attends Yale University and earns a history degree and after college graduation goes on to live a life of wealth and privilege. What would Jesus do? McCain or Obama?

I don't think he'd vote for John McCain. McCain & Palin are just not the type of people Jesus of Nazareth would feel comfortable supporting. (I seriously doubt Jesus would forgive Sarah Palin for aerial wolf gunning.) Further, running on the Republican platform links the ticket to Bush/Cheney; Dick Cheney is Satan, and Christ would never cast a vote for his arch nemesis.

Would Jesus even be a registered voter? He'd probably have a criminal background.

At the very least he'd be on the Department of Homeland Security's terrorist watch list for his liberal stances on socialistic programs. A political alien to the American culture, Jesus would more likely live in Canada or France; thus he'd be ineligible to vote.

I think Jesus would most likely vote for Obama. Jesus would be turned on by his charismatic charm and the sincerity in his voice. I could see the two of them share a cup of tea after touring a natural disaster and discussing the tremendous loss and saying a brief prayer with the victims.

Yeah, I'm sure Jesus would be an Obama man.
